Regional R&D Manager Chocolate

Position Overview

 

Based at our local office in India, Indonesia, Ivory Coast or Thailand, in order to strengthen our Regional R&D team we are currently seeking an:

 

R&D Manager SBU Chocolate, Process & Profitability Improvement

(1 of 4 possible locations, APMEA)

 

Responsible for the Regional R&D Director of Emerging APMEA market, the successful candidate will need to

  • Manage the R&D activities supporting the business development of compound chocolate and fillings (and real chocolate) in EMMA through pro-active implementation of innovations and renovations; support to customer and market based projects; support to customer visits; support to operations.
  • Promote the strategy of the SBU Chocolate towards the R&D community in the region.
  • Manage country specific Process improvement projects, resulting on a substantial business impact. Compound/Chocolate lines, wet and powder lines and sourdough are in the scope of this mission.
  • Coordinate Raw material initiatives in the region

 

Key Accountabilities

 

To fulfil well this function, he/she needs to collaborate daily with:

-           SBU Chocolate: R&D managers, lab and pilot technicians, product managers

-           Markets: R&D managers from countries

-           Operations: production and quality managers in Puratos subsidiaries

-           GR&S: R&D persons working on Proteins, Fats, Cocoa, Sensorial analysis, Statistical Analysis, Test Baking, etc.

-           Other departments: sampling, customer service, purchasing, quality, human resources, etc.

And external

-           Suppliers

-           Customers

-           Universities (optional, only when project opportunities are defined by the SBU)

 

  1. Provide support to the compound/Real chocolate producing countries in the region: 25%
  • Pro-actively implement strategic/international innovations in the region, provide support to adapt the products to the local needs (production capabilities, available raw materials, market and customer needs)
  • Stimulate and support the development and improvement of local innovations for the general market
  • Stimulate and support the product development and improvement on customer projects
  • Follow-up the SANCOC projects: analyze projects, provide support to accelerate the closing, stimulate to fill the pipeline in line with the LRP
  • Participate to customer visits, at the customer and at Puratos, for business development, protection of business at risk and for technical support
  • Provide R&D support to operations: processing improvement, cost reduction, raw material screening and selection
  • Follow up the start-ups, capacity extension projects and acquisitions: provide R&D support (raw materials, formulations, implementation in production, quality standards, sensory and analytical support, …)
  • R&D KPI’s: follow up the implementation per country, provide coaching to improve the outcome

  1. Provide support to the non-producing countries in the region: 15%
  • Stimulate and support the development and improvement of local innovations for the general market
  • Implement international innovations in the region, support adaptations to local needs (production line, available raw materials, market)
  • Stimulate and support the product development and improvement on customer projects
  • Follow-up the SANCOC projects: analyze projects, provide support to accelerate the closing, stimulate to fill the pipeline in line with the LRP
  • Participate to customer visits, at the customer and at Puratos, for business development, protection of business at risk and for technical support
  • For all projects and business development activities: select the most suited sourcing unit (together with the products manager) taking into account the capabilities and the sourcing strategy for the region
  • Facilitate the collaboration between the sourcing unit and the selling country by being the link for all R&D related topics and taking up the  defined roles and responsibilities

 

  1. Follow up key customer(s) in the region (15%)
  • Follow up a defined list of regional and local accounts
  • Follow-up the SANCOC projects: analyze new/ongoing/closed/abandoned projects status, provide support to accelerate successful closing of projects, stimulate to fill the pipeline in line with the LRP, and identify new business development opportunities

 

  1. Build strong teams in the region (10%)
  • Assure own training required to support the business development and to build strong teams
  • Organize and supervise internal training of newcomers and experienced colleagues (R&D, engineering, operations, marketing etc.) on ingredient functionality, processing, formulation and applications, through personalized trainings or the Puratos Chocolate Faculty.
  • Support the recruitment of chocolate R&D
  • Follow up and support the development of the chocolate R&D
  • Create a chocolate R&D community

 

  1. Improve productivity in specific lines (not chocolate exclusive) – 25%
  • Contribute to developing , implementing and sustaining process improvement initiatives
  • Conduct continuous improvement activities with low-to-medium project cost and risk.
  • Manage country specific Process improvement projects, related to a production line, resulting on a substantial business impact.
  • Compound/Chocolate lines, wet and powder lines and sourdough are in the scope of this task.
  • Suggests opportunities to increase production yield of existing lines while keeping same product quality and specifications. Improve product quality at the same time if possible.
  • Define, together with the local R&D Team, best formula and process to optimize quality & output, in line with customer expectations.
  • Search, test and validate new type of production equipment, technology and processes
  • Provide technical support in case of trouble shooting in production
  • Provide support in case of new production lines start-ups
  • Support the TQM requirements and Quality Control objectives and procedures

 

  1. Coordinate Raw Material projects at regional level – 10%
  • Researching new and existing materials and assessing their suitability for use
  • Analyze data to identify opportunities to improve
  • Coordinate initiatives with Suppliers at regional/local level
  • Contribute to the RM initiatives at group level
  • Serve as the point person within the supply organization to resolve short-term supply and availability issues and maintain appropriate alignment
  • Be the first contact person for our subsidiaries regarding technical raw materials issues and coordinate with HQ if necessary
  • Organize raw materials trainings to share & spread your knowledge within the Region
  • Be involved in innovation projects when a specific role of the raw material specialist is required.
  • Build a communication flow and work closely together with our Purchase, R&D, Production and Quality departments.

 

 

Profile and Required Competencies

  • Bachelor or Master in Food Science Chemistry and/or Processing, Food Engineer or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: at least 5 years of formulation and/or processing experience, by preference in a food company. Experience in B to B business, a chocolate manufacturing and/or chocolate using company is a plus.
  • Languages: Very good English (written and spoken).
  • ICT: Microsoft (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Word…)
  • Mobility: willing to travel (30%)
  • Ideally residing in India, Indonesia, Ivory Coast or Thailand but not mandatory.
