Health & Safety Coordinator


Maternity Leave Replacement (12 months)


Reporting to the Director of Operations of Puratos Canada (Fraser Valley), the Health and Safety Coordinator maintains and continuously improves our Health and Safety Program, including our Occupational Safety Standards of Excellence (OSSE) certification. This position also assists with some Quality Assurance tasks to support our Food Safety Management System.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Coordinates the Company’s Health & Safety Program including policies, procedures and instructions across all job functions and duties.
  • Ensures the Company is compliant with all relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Ensures the Health & Safety Program policies and procedures are updated as needed.
  • Update and maintain all Health and Safety documents and files.
  • Assisst in maintaining the Company’s OSSE Certification, including Internal Auditor responsibilities.
  • Works with the Human Resources Manager to manage specific aspects of the Injury Management/Return to Work Program, including WorksafeBC claims.
  • Performs new hire Safety Orientation and ensures all team members receive the necessary orientation and training in their assigned areas and throughout the Plant/Office/Yard.
  • Coordinates and/or delivers Health & Safety related required testing/re-testing.
  • First Aid Team Member (Level II).
  • Ensures appropriate First Aid coverage for each shift.
  • Ensures the First Aid Room is stocked with all required supplies and that it adheres to WorksafeBC regulations.
  • Organizes and participates in the monthly Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, including recording and distributing the minutes of the meetings and tracking the action items to completion. Coordinates training for all JOHSC members.
  • Participates in Accident/Incident Investigations.
  • Organizes and delivers Toolbox Talks.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Skills, Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Maintains updated knowledge and strong technical expertise of Safety, HACCP and ISO standards, regulations, and practices.
  • Flexible and controlled under crisis situations.
  • Highly organized with excellent time management/priority setting skills, with ability to make sound decisions.
  • Demonstrates leadership ability and interpersonal skills that engage employees, create a team environment, drive employee productivity and competence, and achieve plant business goals.
  • Ability to develop and ensure compliance with Safety and Quality Standards
  • Problem solver with solid analytical skills and the ability to trouble shoot as the need arises.


  • Health & Safety Certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum of 1 year experience working in a manufacturing or production environment; OR acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
  • Strong Communication skills in English in all four areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
  • Ability to communicate one-on-one and in group settings with focus on creating win-win solutions.
  • Excellent safety record.
  • Reliable – good attendance is essential.
  • Flexibility in terms of working hours (ie early morning, day, evening).
  • Results orientation with a disposition towards continuous improvement.
  • Highly organized with excellent time management/priority setting skills, and solutions-oriented.
  • Experience in an inclusive diverse work environment.
  • Working proficiency with MS Office applications, including Outlook, Word and Excel, and internet applications.
