R&D Director, Sweet Goods Dry

Position Overview

Responsible for profitable business growth of the product category through the development of innovative solutions, business development, cost optimization, operational support and optimal resource planning.


Primary Responsibilities

1. Manage the R&D team and their output.

a. Align the R&D activities with sales, marketing and operations expectations

b. Continuously challenge the optimal use & efficiency of R&D and measure with KPI

c. Assure a pipeline of talent and ensure competence building in an environment of selfmotivation and interdependency

2. Contribute actively to the category strategy and results

a. Identify market / product opportunities and threats and implement action plans accordingly

b. Implement and support the yearly initiatives and actions

c. Closely follow the sales results and propose measures to ensure profitable growth

d. Ensure a functional link with the BU leaders in the Head Quarters

3. Contribute actively to the company strategy and results

a. Understanding cross BU functionalities & processes

b. Strategic business acumen (internal & external), including managing strategic relations with key accounts and key suppliers

c. Full developed ‘expert’ level with active impact & role outside the country

d. Manages responsibilities outside scope

4. Development of new products and concepts

a. Formulation of products in line with the yearly marketing plan by active participation in the Stage & Gate process.

b. Tailor-made customer demands by following our Stage process.

5. Adaptation of existing formulas a. Cost reduction programs maintaining performances, including raw material rationalization b. Participate pro-actively in optimization of existing portfolios (SKU reduction, positioning, ...)

6. Business Development support to Sales for above mentioned product categories by :

a. Identifying new business opportunities at large customers (prospection)

b. Detecting products at risk

c. Implementing appropriate solutions (existing and new)

d. Making internal and external and seminars explaining benefits presentation of our products

e. Participate in strategic exercises intending to develop our business in the above mentioned products. This should be based on a good understanding of the local market.

7. Support Operations and TQM

a. Support in case of quality issues : judging, root-cause analysis and rework

b. Ensure all steps are respected for a faultless implementation of new products in production

c. Review on a yearly base with QC the non-conformities and look for optimizations

d. Support the TQM requirements

8. Manage accurately all technical administration

a. Ensure complete documentation on raw materials, formulations, process parameters, item requests, QC tests, labelling, TDS... on new or revised products;

b. Build an accessible project documentation in line with our NPD procedure by using the appropriate tools

c. Support the Technical Documentation department

d. Ensure confidentiality on formulas and know-how

e. Monthly reporting to VP of R&D and to the R&D manager of the category in HQ

9. Build expertise & network in specialty area

a. Becoming recognized as leading expert in the product range by training and field experience.

b. Ensure a functional link with the BU specialists in the Head Quarters

c. Build around the expertise an active network of high commercial value of customers, machine suppliers, researchers, vendors and the international Puratos R&D community

d. Provide intelligence on innovative raw materials & technologies that can differentiate our products comply with our food safety procedures upon new raw material selection, product development or modification and sample preparation.

b. Report all food safety and quality issues to immediate Supervisor and / or head of Quality.

12. Responsible for any other assignment given by the direct superior.



Education Requirements

Minimum Preferred - Graduate Degree Masters in Food Science or Related Science Field

Years Of Experience

Minimum - 10 In R&D Leadership Roles

Prior Knowledge/Experience

1. Proven track record of developing talented teams, ideally 10+ years of management experience

2. Experience working directly on the production lines of industrial bakeries for sweet good (cakes, muffins, donuts, etc.)

3. Masters understanding of ingredient functionally and the science behind

4. History of success bringing Innovations to market

5. Strong networker with established network of industry contacts that can be leveraged for business development

6. Thrives in an environment with high level of autonomy but also embraces collaboration
