Operations Manager - Pennant Ingredients

This role will be based out of Pennant Ingredients, our production site in Rochester, NY. Founded in 1938, Pennant Ingredients produces fillings, icings, glazes, and a wide variety of bakery mixes.  


The Operations Manager is responsible for providing direction and leadership for Pennant Ingredients production sites, covering the 5 strategic pillars of excellence: Quality, EH&S, Service, Cost, and People. The Operations Manager is a leader of people and is responsible for building a strong team within the Pennant Ingredients facilities.   


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance of BRC Food Safety Standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Company & Group policies
  • Perform site and area walk­throughs, investigate problem areas, determine root-cause and identify actions plans to eliminate and/or mitigate risks
  • Manages Daily/Weekly/Monthly reporting on Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) for Plant Performance such as customer complaints, right-first-time performance, third-party sanitation, quality audit scores
  • Ensure accident/loss prevention and security policies are in place, understood and followed
  • Achieve Customer Service Level performance target levels: OTIF
  • Manage third-party warehousing
  • Coordinate scheduling of production to meet customer sales orders, deliveries and inventory stocking levels.
  • Achieve Operational and Cost Controls performance target levels: Cost/Ton, Tons/FTE, operational inefficiencies, operational cost to % of sales, working capital, yields, and capital and operational expenditures.
  • Develop 3-5-year capital plan and execute annual capital plan. Develop and implement annual cost savings and cost avoidance plan
  • Resolve variances (production reporting, ingredient usage, labor utilization).
  • Develops a comprehensive plan to raise the level of performance within the production facilities   
  • Build a positive, engaging, all-inclusive and continuous improvement culture
  • Hire, train, coach, develop and manage the operations team
  • Develop and implement employee training, talent improvement and succession plans
  • Conduct annual employee talent calibration and performance reviews for team



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Operations or Business-related field. An MBA is a plus
  • 10 years of relevant operations management experience, preferably within a manufacturing environment
  • Leadership, coaching, and team building skills
  • Ability to work cross functionally and develop business partnerships  
  • Knowledge of process equipment, environmental, health, safety and regulatory compliance and BRC & GMP standards
  • Demonstrated use of Continuous Improvement, TQM and/or Lean tools including six sigma, value stream mapping, root cause / corrective action
  • Strong organizational, planning, influence, presentation and follow-up skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications: Excel, PowerPoint, Word
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to speak Spanish is a plus
  • SAP experience is a plus
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Regularly required to stand, walk and climb for extended periods of time
