Is Food Safety Management at the heart of your expertise and do you have the experience and the ambition to drive to the next level the way we manage Food Safety across our 61 production units spread in 50 countries worldwide?


This is a new role and you will be part of our international operational excellence team based in Belgium. The job is either based in Belgium (close to Brussels) or in US (East Coast). 30% travel is foreseen.


The Group Food Safety Manager is a key role within the Puratos organization. In this position, you will make sure we have the right Food Safety programs in place to make us a reliable partner towards our customers and stakeholders.


You will report to the Group QHSE Director.



The main mission of this role is to:


  • Be part of the operational excellence program in order to roll out a excellence food safety program in production facilities of Puratos from raw materials and design till delivery to customers, including warehousing and distribution.
  • Drive the Puratos food safety risks control and prevention programs sharing best practices, providing support and providing expert advice on risk assessment, prevention and control systems.
  • Developing, improving and maintaining Food Safety Policies, Standards, Procedures and Programs applicable to Puratos affiliates.
  • Drive the improvement of the basic food safety programs within the manufacturing sites. Prioritize critical actions to ensure zero Food Safety crisis, and support operations to achieve and even exceed Food Safety requirements.
  • Use scientific knowledge to optimize the existing food safety programs in the plants. Interact and work with external groups (research, regulatory agencies, industry groups) on emerging issues and new technologies. The Global Food Safety Manager is responsible to be updated and follow this trends. This role will manage Food Safety compliance and excellence, monitoring and reporting KPI’s linked to Food Safety Standards for the Group.



Key accountabilities 


  • Lead proactive prevention to avoid reoccurrence of non-conformances identified in internal/external Food Safety audits.
  • Support the Puratos Food Safety expert community (at HQ and in affiliates) and specific core expert network(s) to share knowledge, information and best practices on Food Safety.
  • Ensure that Puratos is proactively following market trends on Food Safety and prevention as well as evolution of regulation on Food Safety. Benchmark proactively on food safety prevention and detection systems (environmental monitoring, raw material monitoring, releasing controls finished product)
  • Ensure that food safety hazards are always identified at early stages of new projects and relevant control measures implemented before products get commercialized.
  • Lead the food safety validation of emerging new technologies designed by R&D.
  • Work in partnership with R&D to validate shelf life of products from a food safety point of view and ensure that appropriate storage and distribution conditions are specified for existing and new products.
  • Support food safety risk assessments for ‘raws’ and packs done by Group Vendor Quality.
  • Raise food safety awareness in the affiliates and Business Units, develop and maintain training programs to be rolled out locally by Quality Managers.
  • Provide technical and practical support and expertise to local Quality teams and Management teams to investigate food safety incidents and identify root causes.
  • Audit/maintain list of capable external labs that can support routine testing or specific additional testing that might be required in case of food safety incidents.
  • Drive Excellence in Food Safety Standards as part of the Operational excellence program by:
    • Supporting the local Operational teams to share knowledge, information and best practices.
    • Providing technical support to the local teams in preparing risk assessments regarding microbiology, toxicology and product safety
    • In partnership with Regulatory team prepare Global Statements related to Food Safety as and when required. Work proactively to be in compliance when regulation linked to Food Safety could evolve
    • Manage capex portfolio linked to Food Safety improvements


Who are we looking for?


  • Master degree Food Engineering, Food Science, Engineering/Biochemistry with specific expertise in Microbiology (Ph.D. degree in food microbiology), Biochemistry or Toxicology or related field
  • Minimum 7 years of practical experience as Quality/Food Safety manager, including setting-up a Quality & Food Safety Management System, preferably at multi-site level
  • Knowledge of different Quality tools and Quality & Food Safety Management Systems (HACCP, GFSI, ..)
  • Knowledge of food processes (powder, UHT, fermentation, chocolate fruit filling, ..)
  • Having experience in successfully implemented GFSI standards or be a certified lead assessor for one of more GFSI standards (BRC, IFS, SQF, FSSC22000) with substantial practical experience in auditing is a nice to have
  • Be able to vulgarize complex matters in food safety, and make them understandable at all levels of the organization
  • Be an excellent communicator and influencer, and also able to drive for results
  • Speaking and writing fluently in English is a must. Additional languages are an advantage
  • Proficient in structuring a project, as well as very good time management, prioritization, and stress resistant
  • Experience working with the design and implementation of food safety plans / programs.
  • You are flexible to travel up to 30% of the time (mainly between Belgium and US then globally)
