R&D Bioprocess Engineer

 

Key Accountabilities

 

Based in our R&D team in Andenne, we are currently looking for our new Bioprocess Engineer. Your mission will be to become our expert on enzymes production and as such lead the development and scale-up of industrial fermentation processes in a multidisciplinary way of working. Your main accountabilities will be the following:

 

Lead fermentation related projects respecting budget and deadlines:

 

  • Manage projects according global R&D and business expectations in a multidisciplinary way of working
  • Formulate and optimize fermentation media
  • Develop new fermentation processes and strategies
  • Optimize and scale up production processes
  • Develop and upgrade procedures and methodologies

 

Develop expertise in the area of enzyme production with focus on fermentation and related topics (equipment, raw materials, parameters,  understanding at cellular level etc.):

 

  • Build strong relationships with research communities specialized in fermentation (academic, institutional and private)
  • Set up an Advisory/Consultant board
  • Keep track of new technologies and trends to identify new opportunities in fermentation and related topics
  • Manage external collaborations and projects with academics or institutes
  • Create a unique and common approach for to scale up from lab to pilot and large-scale fermentation
  • Implement analytical understanding of fermentation at a cellular level

 

Manage the lab scale and the pilot plant as a unique “Innovation and Demo Fermentation Platform”:

 

  • Maintain the equipment (hardware/software) at state of the art level
  • Manage planning and deadline.
  • Manage the maintenance requirements

 

Handle people management with direct and indirect reports:

 

  • Develop a training approach in the field
  • Manage student internships and/or coach people in the fermentation team in charge of student (Bac+3, Engineer, Master) 

 

Offer proactive support to other R&D, Production or QC activities

 

Who are we looking for?

 

  • M.S., Eng or Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering or related fieldn and experience in the field.
  • Practical hands-on research expertise in microbial fermentation.
  • Good knowledge in heterologous enzyme/protein expression.
  • Strong technical fundamentals and practical experience in the design and execution of experiments.
  • High enthusiasm for industrial fermentation process development, validation, process scale-up and continuous process improvements in yield, quality, and economics approaches.
  • People management skills.
  • Ability to work in matrix structure.
  • Problem solving and “can do” approach.
  • Up to date with trending literature on industrial fermentation practices/trends and technologies.
  • Familiar with downstream processing technologies.
  • Ability to carry out tasks associated with technology transfer.
  • Fluent in English, knowledge of French is an asset.
