Downstream Bioprocess Engineer

As a Bioprocess Engineer – DSP you perform and manage Downstream Processing (DSP) projects for the recovery of proteins/enzymes post fermentation at Puratos’ R&D site in Andenne. You lead process & technologies improvements initiatives in coordination with the bioprocess manager and support tech transfer into manufacturing or quality control.



Key Accountabilities


DSP – 70%

  •  You explore and develop new DSP and formulation related technologies to ensure continuous improvement of processes, technologies and tools currently used at Puratos for enzyme/protein recovery post fermentation (including but not limited to MF, UF, chromatography, sterile filtration….)
  •  You design and lead the process development, characterization, scale-up and tech transfer to onsite manufacturing facilities
  •  You coach and mentor junior colleagues in the team and you provide expertise and guidance on downstream processing 
  •  You apply bioengineering concepts for troubleshooting, process modeling and translation to experimental design and execution
  •  You implement corrective actions and control plans to reduce variability and increase productivity related to Downstream performance
  •  You interact and provide expertise to cross-functional department (QC, production, regulatory)
  •  You update and present results during internal & potentially external meetings
  •  You identify, suggest and perform analytical protocols to evaluate yields and recovery when required


USP – 30%


  •  With the help of team members, you perform lab scale and pilot scale fermentation
  •  You identify and perform analytical methods for the characterization of the fermentation



Who are we looking for?

  • You have a degree in Bio engineer or related fields or equivalent throughout experiences
  • One to three years’ experience in biotech would be an advantage
  • You have hands-on experience in downstream processing, ideally in harvesting & purifying "sensitives" recombinant proteins (enzymes)
  • You have knowledge of DSP process development (resins, membranes types and sizes screening, Design-of-Experiment (DoE) approach for process development)
  • You have relevant experience in filtrations systems, TFF, depth filtration, dialysis and others separation methods
  • You have experience in precipitation methods (salts, flocculation, etc..) for biomass removals
  • You have experience in looking after and maintaining DSP equipment
  • You are able to identify, troubleshoot and solve technical issues. You have strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Understanding proteins – filtration membranes interactions is an advantage
  • You have an excellent knowledge of English and/or French.
